Local Devon Foodies Page

Here is some information about the great local food suppliers we know (and use in the terrace café). Please feel free to contact us to add your own favourites - and comment on ours!

Free-range eggs - can you beat the wonderful eggs from Lee Cross Farm, and have you ever come across more double yolkers? Contact: 01884 855494 (wholesale only).

Free-range pork and sausages from Becklong, Bickleigh - the Mills family have a small but wonderful selection from their smallholding on the other side of the Valley.

Meat - Toogoods West Exe - local farmer Ian Toogood and family have revitalised West Exe with their excellent and popular delicatessen. Beef from their own herd grazed on the Knighsthayes estate. Contact: 01884 243421.

All kinds of local food - Darts Farm Shop Topsham - the future of shopping as one review had it. Darts Farm are a great supporter of many local producers - the Dart Shopping Village has expanded at breakneck speed - and now they also have Fired Earth and Aga shops too.

Real local bread - Jill's Delights - from Bickleigh and Killerton - the best bread we have found locally.

If you're not eating with us - then here are some suggestions locally:

Cadeleigh Arms, Cadeleigh (01883 855238/info@thecadeleigharms.co.uk) - Elspeth & Jane have brought real food to the neighbourhood, outshining the poor offerings in Bickleigh itself. Readers of Devon Life November 2007 will find out much more. Yearlstone wines are available, displayed prominently on the bar.

Culm Valley Inn, Culmstock - It would be easy to drive past this pub by the bridge in the village of Culmstock. But we went there on recommendation, and have never been disappointed. Fresh fish delivered daily, cooked beautifully and simply - occasional local beer - pity it isn't yet stocking Devon wine!

Jack in the Green, Rockbeare - very high reputation - consistently excellent.

Masons Arms, Knowstone - superb cooking in small pub. Special occasions.

Toucan Cafe Bampton (01398 331777/enquiries@toucanrestaurant.co.uk) - Jenny and Julia have been great supporters of Devon wine since they came down from London several years ago - a fun bistro for stylish lunches - with local ingredients. Jenny's light touch with pastries is legendary.

Otterton Mill, Otterton - set beside the river Otter in one of Devon's most beautiful valleys, just a mile or so from East Devon's magnificent world heritage coast, Otterton Mill is a centuries old working water mill, a famous bakery and shop brim full of superb local produce, a fabulous restaurant serving food to die for and an art gallery. See www.ottertonmill.com for more details.
